Our Greatest Commandment

Matthew 22:37–39 “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.” This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: “Love your neighbour as yourself.”

Jesus spoke these words when He was questioned by the Pharisees about the greatest commandment. His response is both beautifully simple and profoundly deep.

“Love the Lord your God” — Jesus makes it clear that this begins with a personal and wholehearted relationship with God. It is not partial or conditional; it is an invitation to love Him with all our heart, all our soul, and all our mind — every part of who we are.

It is from this place of wholehearted devotion that the second command flows: “Love your neighbour as yourself.” When we first understand and receive God’s love, it shapes how we see ourselves. In knowing we are loved by Him, we begin to value who we are. From there, loving others becomes a natural outworking rather than a difficult task.

At Calvary, it is our teams deep desire that every student comes to truly understand what it means to love God and be loved by Him. We believe that when children discover this for themselves, it transforms how they see their identity and purpose. It gives them confidence to step out, to build meaningful friendships, and to explore the unique gifts they have been given. It creates a sense of security and belonging — a genuine connectedness.

This sense of identity and belonging has a powerful impact on learning. When students feel secure and valued, they are more willing to take risks in their learning, persevere through challenges, and engage more deeply in the classroom. Confidence in who they are allows them to approach their education with curiosity rather than fear of failure. Strong relationships with peers also foster collaboration, empathy, and a positive learning environment where students can thrive together.

We are committed to providing opportunities for students to encounter and grow in their understanding of God. Our Chaplains play an integral role in this, whether through our vibrant chapel services, intentional check-ins, or lunchtime activities such as prayer groups, connect groups, and craft club. In addition, we thoughtfully implement programs such as Shine and Rock and Water, which support students in developing resilience, confidence, and strong connections — all grounded in the understanding of God’s love for them. These programs further equip students with the emotional awareness and strength needed to navigate both their learning and relationships well.

Our hope is simple: that every child would come to know who God is, who they are in Him, and how deeply they are loved — and that this foundation would empower them to flourish not only in their faith, but also in their learning and life.

God Bless,
