Alternate Pathways

Alternate Pathways are available for students in Year 11 and 12, and in some cases, year 10. Courses can run from 12-24 months and depending on certificate level and number of modules to complete. The availability of VETiS funding could mean there is an additional cost (Fee for Service).

Prior to applying to any alternate pathways courses, students are required to book an appointment with the Pathways Advisor to discuss all options to determine if the course of interest is right for them.

Please click through the below to view possible available options. All courses on offer will depend on the RTO’s (registered training organisation) enrolment numbers, trainer availability and individual student funding availability.

School-Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships (SAT)

Students in Years 11 and 12 are employed as apprentices or trainees with a qualified employer who is tasked with training them in the chosen qualification. The goal is that students while continuing to study towards their Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE) will also be earning hours and modules of training towards a Certificate III, IV or Diploma qualification. As there are several factors to consider before a student even begins to search for an employer, students should be made aware of their responsibilities and the implications on their schooling timetable through a meeting with the Pathways Advisor.

Online University Studies

Most universities offer online courses where seniors can study select first year courses. In these courses, students are treated like university students and are encouraged to have the self-sufficiency to seek support from the university and adhere to assessment requirements, schedules, and policies. Successful completion of each course provides benefits that vary with each university ranging from automatic entry into a range of bachelor programs to adjusted ATAR selection rankings.
To qualify, students must meet strict eligibility criteria in their most recent report card and have the support of their parents/guardians and the pathways advisor.

Work Experience

All Year 10 students complete 5 days of work experience in term 4. The purpose is to allow students the opportunity to see into a chosen industry of interest and learn if it is the right fit for their learning goals moving into senior years. As students are required to locate their own work experience placement, we understand this can feel a little daunting and encourage students to start their search immediately after their SET plan in term 3. The pathways office is available to support students in their search for the right placement.

Students are welcome to complete additional work experience in years 10 to 12 pending classroom learning and assessments are not impacted by extended absences. All placements are therefore to take place during term breaks for seniors.
