Goodness: A Right Start for a Bright Future
Goodness: A Right Start for a Bright Future
I have a strong passion for Early Childhood Education and the importance of this foundation particularly in a Christian environment. It is my pleasure to lead the Early Learning Centre team at Calvary, where Christian values are a priority.
Goodness is one of our core values. Goodness, shapes how children see themselves and how they treat others. In the early years especially, children are forming habits of the heart. They are learning empathy, respect, humility, and kindness. These qualities do not grow by accident — they are nurtured intentionally.
Scripture reminds us, “Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God…” (1 Peter 5:6). When children learn to value others, to speak kindly, to forgive, and to show compassion, they begin to reflect the character of Christ in simple but powerful ways.
When I think of goodness, I am reminded of a story of little 4-year-old Sam, who announced proudly to his friends one morning, ‘I’m the goodest person ever’. He thought so, because he had packed away three blocks and shared half a cracker (the smaller half… but still!). Later that day, the teacher having heard Sam, took the opportunity to talk about goodness when the children were gathered. They discussed the thought that goodness isn’t about telling everyone you’re good — it’s about showing kindness, even when no one notices. The next day, he helped a friend quietly. No announcements. No trophies. Just goodness growing — like a little seed taking root.
As educators and families, we can guide and tend to the seeds taking root every day. Those seeds can’t take root and grow unless they are in a rich environment. When we get the soil right the plants thrive.
We have a motto in the Calvary Christian Early Learning Centre that simply says, “Right Start, Bright Future”. This motto captures the heart of what we seek to provide for every child. A right start is more than preparation for school — it is preparation for life. It’s good soil.
When planted in good soil, given sunlight, water, and care, a plant flourishes. Its roots grow deep. Its stem strengthens. Over time, it produces beauty and fruit.
In the same way, when children are planted in an environment rich in love, truth, and faith, they flourish.
Good soil looks like:
A culture where kindness is modelled daily.
Educators who speak life and encouragement.
Clear boundaries that provide safety and consistency.
Prayer woven naturally into the day.
A community where every child is known and valued.
As someone who has spent many years in Christian education, I have seen the long-term impact of these early foundations. A child who learns goodness early develops strong relational roots. They carry respect into friendships, resilience into challenges, and compassion into leadership.
This is what a right start truly means — cultivating hearts that are grounded in Christ and growing steadily toward a bright future.
Thank you for partnering with us as we nurture your children. Together, we are tending the soil, trusting God for growth, and watching young lives flourish.
God Bless,
